Technology Break At Home

I should state that  I like technology.  I like that people around the world can be connected so easily.  I like seeing images from across the globe on Twitter , I like texting my sister about something I wanted to ask her, and I like that I can share a short video and a smile with someone in just a few clicks. Some time ago, I talked about giving up technology over a vacation.  It was almost two full weeks of giving up almost all forms of technology and really disconnecting with the world.  It was two weeks of living in the moment and just immersing myself in where I was and who I was with.  The vacation gave me a mental boost.  Being disconnected and not constantly on call added to the experience and proved to be an overwhelmingly positive experience.   Constantly Connected Recently, I have begun to notice just how much technology dominates my days.  I should state that while my camera might be technology, I don't wish to step away from my camera and would likely be very sad to

Why Doesn't Arizona Observe Daylight Savings Time

I have very recently learned that countries outside the United States also observe Daylight Savings time though they might call it summer time or some other variation or combination of the two.  I have to say that I was surprised and asked for clarification as I thought I heard wrong.  I grew up on the east coast of the United States and never figured out exactly why we needed to change the clocks though I had always done it and didn't give it much thought.  In the fall we turned clocks back to presumably get some daylight in the earlier morning hours but that also meant that it was dark around 5:00 pm for a few weeks.  Spring called for turning the clock ahead, giving up an hour of sleep, and suddenly making it darker in the morning.  I don't know why I never thought about other countries adjusting their clocks.  I guess I just assumed that it was some strange tradition in the U.S. dating back to our more agricultural days.  It was the way things were until I moved to Arizon

When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up     What do you want to be when you grow up?  This question is asked repeatedly to children and teens and they are expected to have an answer.  Perhaps not the complete and well thought out answer but a general type of answer.  The truth is that I never really liked this question because it seems so final.  It feels like we can only be one thing.  What do you want to be when you grow up?  A doctor?  A lawyer?  A business owner or artist?  Why just one when most of us have many interests and many talents?  Just to clarify, I do adulting well.  I am certainly a responsible adult but I don't think that you need to grow up to be an adult.  That childlike curiosity and enthusiasm for new discoveries are typically lost along the way as we grow up.  Being willing to try new things and put yourself out there is something that many people are hesitant to do because they don't want to look silly or be judged.    What I Learned From My Children      My children taught me t
